Candace Calvert: Holding Onto The Rein Of Faith

Everyone's Story is thrilled to host this week multi-published author Candace Calvert. I met Candace at the first ACFW Conference I attended and was touched by her warm greeting to me, a perfect stranger. Who would have known that we both had to overcome similar ailments and struggles? And that's one of the many reasons why I'm glad Candace is here with us because, as you will see when you read about her accident, we all fight the need to control our own lives only to find out time and painful time again that it's impossible. On a lighter note: I'd been so mesmerized by Candace's story that when typing this intro it just sunk into my mind that she's been offered a new 3-book contract on top of the 5 novels that she has published already. Congratulations, Candace! I am so very happy for you  And, check out the awesome Book Giveaway Candace is offering--you're going to love it! Both Candace and I are looking forward to seeing your comments.

BookGiveaway:
Candace is offering to five randomly chosen commenters one printed edition of one of the titles seen on this segment, with each winner receiving one book . The winners will be announced here on Friday, August 30th, between 5-6 PM EST. For convenience, please leave your contact information within your comment. Thanks!

A Woman of Strength by Candace Calvert

“For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10
I slid my boot into the stirrup that April day clueless I was about to face death, a ride that would forever change my life. I only knew spring had finally come after the most soul-bruising winters I’d ever experienced. In the previous eighteen months I’d endured the unexpected and painful end of a twenty-three year marriage followed by a flood that threatened what was left of my broken home. But on that April day I prided myself on being a survivor. I was a devoted single mother, a veteran ER nurse, an avid equestrienne and, mostly importantly, a Strong woman—capital ‘S.’ Things were under control again. I was fearless. Only weeks before, I’d proven it by strapping on a parachute and leaping from a plane at 13,000 feet. A skydiver, not a castoff wife: strong!

Wrong.

Only minutes after I settled into that saddle, my young thoroughbred spooked and then bucked, hurling me over his head and onto the ground. I heard bones shatter: eight ribs (one that bloodied my lung), my upper back, and my neck-- in three places. When I struggled to haul myself from the dirt, a shard of bone bit into my spinal cord causing my right arm to burn with searing pain. And then it went numb. Somehow I crawled through the fence, staggered back to my house and phoned for help.

Lying on a trauma gurney in my own ER, I felt anything but strong. Neck collar, oxygen, IV, urinary catheter, eighteen merciful milligrams of morphine, x-rays and a CT scan—I was on the wrong side of the stethoscope. The emergency team, my dear friends, did everything possible to help me, but before long I’d hear concerns about permanent spinal damage. My fear returned with a vengeance. I was losing control.

I had believed this to my core: A strong woman stays in control, always, and doesn’t fully trust anyone. After all, I’d trusted my husband and he left; I’d trusted the security of my home and the floodwaters came. The big question hit me as hard as that fall: Did I trust God? I prayed to Him, I worshipped Him, but did I really allow myself to depend on Him? A little card tucked onto my dresser mirror read, “Let Go and Let God,” yet I’d fought desperately to keep life’s reins in my own hands. And they were yanked away.

In the following months as I worked in physical therapy to regain full use of my arms, I had time to ponder and to pray. I wondered about my need to feel strong. Was it simply armor to ward off other unimaginable hurts? I began to set new priorities, evaluate success and survival in different ways. With great relief, I let God take the burdens from my battered shoulders. I began to feel, deep in my soul, that my life had been spared for a reason. God had a plan for me.

“By Accident,” the inspirational account of my riding accident, appears in Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul and was my first published work. Since then I’ve published five (going on six) full-length Christian fiction novels, and recently signed a contract for three more. As with most authors, each story contains a bit of my own DNA. Disaster Status is the story of a feisty ER nurse who learns the difference between being a strong woman and a woman of strength. Code Triage is the heart-tugging story of a couple headed for divorce. And in Trauma Plan, a nurse who suffered a broken neck is determined to return to the career she loves. It even has a skydiving scene!

I have no doubt that God’s plan—the miracle that saved me that spring day—was to prepare me to write stories that inspire, encourage, and offer hope. Sometimes I joke that God had to drop this stubborn woman into the dirt and break her neck to finally get her attention. He made me weak long enough to teach me the difference between being strong and having strength.

 That difference is faith.

Thank you, Elaine, for hosting me here. I love this opportunity to connect with your readers!

  1. Candy, boo-hooing over my way! I'd heard parts of your story, but never the whole thing. Sooo inspiring!! And like Elaine said, you are one of THE most encouraging, gracious ladies I've ever met. Thank you so much for touching lives and hearts with your stories.

Elaine, what a wonderful way to start my weekend! Looking forward to seeing you both soon at ACFW! :)

    1. Cynthia, I'm so pleased you've enjoyed Candace's story. Without exaggeration, I've pre-read her story 5 times before posting it and it always zinged my heart. It's a story I can relate to both emotionally and physically.

I'm sad to say but after attending ACFW consecutively for years I won't be able to make it to this one. I'll be thinking of all of you. Blessings on every connection you make this year.

  3. As soon as I read about the horse riding accident and sky diving I remembered reading about it in one of the books. Now I'm really curious how much "truth"/personal experiences actually are woven into those books. Thanks for the personal story.

  4. Candace, I've never met you, but I love your writing. Terribly allergic to horses but I think God brings us all to a place were we have to (sometimes repeatedly) acknowledge just how desperate we are for Him. I struggle with holding the reigns myself. Too afraid of heights to sky dive though! (okay - it's not the heights - it's the fall from the heights that terrifies me!) Congratulations on the book contract. More wonderful fiction for the rest of us as God uses your gifts and talents for His glory.

Do come back again for another visit.

  6. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I know first hand how hard it is for a nurse to be on the other side of the stethoscope. I was in a horrific accident and ended up in the ER. I saw xrays and said a prayer for the patient only to find out I was that patient. My first child was only 6 months old. She was walking before I was. I learned so many things during my recovery. 1st God was in control and 2nd I wasn't.
I love your books. I can so easily lose myself in the storyline. There's so much inspiration in each one. I am sorry for all you've suffered, but know when God closes one door, he opens another. You are reaching so many people with your books.

    3. Awesome blog Elaine. Candace's riding accident story struck close to home with me. As a former eventer and dressage rider, I had two close friends fall from their horses. One is now a quadriplegic and the other died as a result of breaking her neck when the mare reared and crushed Terri against the wall of the indoor arena. I love how Candace saw God throughout her healing journey. And I'm so glad she followed his leading to a path of writing for him.

    4. Lisa, thanks for the visit! Wow, what sad stories you've shared with about your friends. I cannot imagine the agony and grief for their families and friends, like yourself. I hope the one that survived the accident is making the most out of her/his life. And like how Candace followed God's gentle nudging to write, I hope you've been blessed as well to honor your friends with your own strength and heart in your writing.

  7. I so enjoy reading your books, Candace. I look forward to each new book and your posts on Facebook. God teaches us so much in those moments of tragedy and trauma because in those moments any illusion of control is gone and we see who is truly in control. I have learned a little of that over the past year as my 8 year old daughter and I grieve the unexpected loss of my husband/her daddy at a young age to a heart attack. God has taught us so much in our journey, just as God taught you so much in your journey. Please keep writing your uplifting and encouraging books.

  27. I, too, am one of Candace's admirers as well as her agent. Beyond her courage and faith, there is also her compassion and caring. She is the exact person you would want to have with you in the ER. I, too, am a member of the broken neck club having fallen down a flight of stairs and landed on my head, shattering C-1 with more than a dozen breaks. That happened the week before ACFW in Sept and I was not referred to PT until the following May and even then the therapists told me my situation was 'hopeless' but God was truly in charge and healed me with no deficits whatsoever. And interestingly like Candace, I was a control freak probably from years of being a single mom with three teens and running the agency and thinking it was all up to me! I was told in a vision that God could heal anything and He did in my case. I did think he was teaching me to surrender to Him but beyond that it was also to bring me closer and to have Him at the center of my life instead of anything else. Candace's wonderful stories are both authentic and inspiring.

    2. Natasha, thanks so much for visiting today. And what an amazing story you shared with us of God's grace and love for us. I've told Candace about my own physical problems I'd experienced 14 years ago of the time my right arm was mostly paralyzed and my shoulder muscles had atrophied. It took several months to hunt down a specialist who could adequately diagnose my problem (he did in 5 minutes what other doctors failed to do in months!) and 9 months of physical therapy to make me mostly right. My ordeal however, didn't come close to what you two suffered. I love how you both learned to trust Him and am now sharing it with others.

Bless you both for donating to spinal cord research. Due to a horrific car accident involving the daughter of my husband's friend, this young woman is paralyzed from the neck down. Rehab has helped regain some arm/hand movement. And now, about 2 years after this accident, she is beginning to experience some leg muscle feeling. Who knows if she will walk again? Who knows what will become of any one of us? All I know is that I believe in God and that He loves each one of us.

    1. I appreciate your visit, Ginger. Oh, I remember the show Emergency. Loved it! I'm an adrenaline junkie and know if I could deal with human suffering (and blood) better I probably would have gone into medicine. Thank God for strong people like Candace!

    2. Ginger! Yes, "Emergency"! I love that show, and (giggle) since I began my ER nursing career in the 70's, I was often called "Dixie" by the medics and firefighters--I took it as a high compliment.
So glad you enjoyed DISASTER STATUS. I felt such a kinship with nurse Erin Quinn. And I loved adding the non-human characters like the old goldfish and the yodeling therapy dog. Thanks for stopping by!

  32. Thank you so much for sharing your story Candace. I really appreciate it :D I think many of us try to be in "control". I know I do. It's hard to let go. I'm one of those people that has to see where the puzzle piece I've been handed fits in the puzzle of life--if I can't see where it fits, well, it must not belong to me :p LOL God knows I'm all about order and routine and He sure likes to shake things up for me. NO letting me complete all the border pieces BEFORE I work on the center. NOPE. God has His own way, His own order, and His own plan and the picture is often more glorious and satisfying than the one I thought I was building.

Enter me in the contest please and thanks you :D

    1. So glad for your visit, Louise. I can very well relate to God shaking up any attempts of humanly order... love the jigsaw puzzle analogy!

You're definitely entered in the Giveaway contest :)

    2. Hi Louise--I love your analogy, too! Life can indeed be a puzzle. I understand that "order and routine" gene, though I'm trying to stretch my boundaries more and more. Short of skydiving, however, these days (though it made for a great scene in Trauma Plan).
Thanks for stopping by, and best of luck in the giveaway!

    2. Hi Maria, always so good to connect with another nurse--thank you for all that you do in service to others. Such a blessing. A huge part of why I write my hopeful medical fiction is to honor you. :)

  34. Candace, though I have heard bits and pieces of your story before, and knew your trauma was severe, I had never seen a list of your injuries. Wow!

Often when bad things happen, we never get to see the good that God uses it for. Your story is an inspiration. Just look at all the lives that you have had the opportunity to influence through your books and the testimony of your experience--mine included.

    1. Thanks for visiting, Kristen. Us people seem to get stuck in the muck of dark times. I agree: I'm thankful that authors like Candace can show others how to rise above it.

      Hope to see you again.

    2. Hi Kristen. I'm grateful every day for the chance to connect with and encourage folks. It's such a blessing for me. God certainly knew that this nurse had more to share, (Smile) beyond guaze pads, aspirins, and syringes. And I don't have to wear exam gloves to type! Thank you for stopping by. I enjoy interacting with you on Facebook.

  35. Ms. Calvert, thank you for sharing your personal testimony! Your raw bravery and courage is encouraging to me on a deeply personal level. God is faithful throughout life's worst trials! Even when we are weak, He is strong. He uses our lives as a testimony to His enduring faithfulness and love. Thank you for being an inspiration and blessing others through your novels! I am eagerly awaiting your next "Grace Medical" book!

You give so many of us who have all but lost hope and given up the direction we need back to God and Hope and Faith. May God continue to bless you without limit.

  37. It's never fun being the patient! I guess one good thing is that you know protocol and what you expect out of your RN's/MD's...phlebs..ect! I have been hospitalized a few x over the past few years and what I love is not telling them that I am a RN...and then telling them later in their shift..just kinda slip it in later in the shift! hehe...:) Would love to win one of your books...I can see myself easily getting into this fun series...I LOVE medical drama/fiction!! :) Glad you recovered well...Blessings. 2. Great to "meet" a fellow nurse, Kellie. I understand what you're saying; I don't tell staff that I'm a nurse right away, either. Mostly because it used to make ME nervous when I was treating a medical professional! I'm so glad that you enjoy medical drama, and I hope you'll give mine a try. Good luck on the giveaway!

  38. So inspirational! :) Your story perfectly illustrates how God uses the most trying of times to prepare us for something big. God definitely used your incident to inspire your writing Candace, especially Trauma Plan! You portrayed Riley's journey perfectly. Thank you for using your own experiences to inspire your readers. 2. Nastassja, you found me here--what a delight! Thank you for the kind words. Riley was one of my favorite heroines and, yes, she dealt with a lot of the issues that I faced after the accident. I loved that Riley is a chaplain (I have chaplaincy training also) and, in fact, my new series will center around chaplains. Those generous, selfless community volunteers who put themselves "out there" to help so many people in the aftermath of tragedy. True heroes. Thanks for stopping by, friend!

  39. I went through a devastating divorce after 24 1/2 years! I remarried a precious man who treats me like a Queen. I began suffering terrible physical and mental health problems and had to quit teaching and go on disability. It broke my heart but I now have time for God, prayer, Bible study, and am now going to be facilitating WRAP groups (Wellness Recovery ACtion Plan) this year! God has given me "teaching" but in a very different fashion ! Rhonda rhonda_nash_hall@comcast.net

  40. Thank you for sharing Candace's story. It is so easy for us to forget to give God credit, when we have come through many battles. Even committed Christians forget that the Power in us is the gift of the Holy Spirit. Often we give ourselves too much credit. This made me think of Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 12:9-11:

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  41. Wow, that's really inspiring - God truly does work for the good of those who love Him. I've read your first four books and they have blessed me and my veterinary nurse sister (pun intended!) - I'm only sorry you had to experience so much pain.
I used to do horse riding too so I especially enjoyed 'Code Triage' - I considered skydiving but your description in 'Trauma Plan' was so terrifyingly realistic that I think I've changed my mind...
If I am one of the oh-so-fortunate individuals picked to win one of your books, could I be so bold as to request 'Rescue Team'? I have all of the others.
    Thanks for the great blog!

For me it's been such a long process of learning to relinquish control, I'm afraid it will take my entire life. :) I so appreciate your transparency. You've "comforted others with the comfort you've been given" - what a blessing! I see now why your books have such an undercurrent of deep emotional truth - you've lived it.

  46. To date, the most amazing week ever on Everyone's Story is coming to an end... although a new one is about to begin. Yea! I must thank my guest, Candace Calvert, for such an awesome week. Candace, you've enjoyed a huge amount of international hits by many treasured fans of yours, as well as new folks who can't wait to read your novels. Your blog segment has touched many people's hearts and have encouraged them to "keep on keepin' on." I am grateful and blessed to have hosted you this past week.

It's been very interesting timing for me because my 3 bad neck discs have flared up and your words on the segment as well as your interactions with each commenter have also served to encourage me to let God have control this week. I've also rediscovered the glory and power of Him and enjoyed seeing things happen for the good that I hadn't seen occur when I was too busy stage-directing (or trying to!) it myself.

Thanks too, Candace, for the phenomenal 5-book Giveaway!! And the winners are:

    Caroline Brown
    Bonnie Roof
    Maria Kulscar
    Kay M.
    Robbye

Congratulations ♡ Both Candace and I will be contacting you shortly with information. Happy reading!

    Blessings to all.

His plans, His connections are amazing, and I have know doubt that His hand was in this as well.
